White Box Cybersecurity, Because You Can't Lead What You Can't Explain
Small and new businesses have a lot going on. We understand. You probably are not focused on what you cybersecurity process is, why it's necessary, or how it works. (We'll assume that you have a process.)
That's completely OK at first.
Your business' growth is based on creating value for customers. That value proposition needs to include the trust that your data capture is secure and that you handle data in a secure manner.
Just as your prospects and customers don't want to be in a business relationship with you that feels unsafe or "flaky," they won't give you their data if they believe you can't handle it securely.
As you grow you will want to create guidelines and rules for securing your systems, your data, and your customers' data. You'll need to be able to explain your plans to creditors such as banks where you get loans, or to regulatory agencies, or to customers.
You'll need to be able to explain your cybersecurity process.
You might be technically inclined, but we recommend that if you do not lead a technical function you should focus on creating understanding of all leaders of what your cybersecurity processes are, what they cover, why they cover these (and not those) assets, and -- at the C-suite level -- what it costs.
Start with yourself. Can you explain your cybersecurity process to your bankers or your front-line employees? If they ask questions, can you answer them? If not, you probably don't understand its role in your company well enough.
Unless you lead the cybersecurity function, you are not responsible for understanding its technical details. But you are responsible for aligning your cybersecurity function with your growth plans and your strategy. That's white box cybersecurity.
